Rim Bus Tour
With
a map of Grand Canyon Village in hand, we picked up the pace to explore
the rim-side attractions of this National Historic District. We walked
east along the Rim, eating an ice cream cone. Passing the Kachina
Lodge and the Thunderbird Lodge, we arrived at the world-famous El
Tovar Hotel. This 100-room luxury hotel was built in 1905, designed
after the Northern European lodges of the period. After browsing through
the work of several artists and photographers, we went next door to
the Hopi House. Although
the Native Americans of the Hopi tribe did not reside in the dwelling
anymore, we enjoyed browsing through the Native American artifacts.
Betty purchased a bracelet, some pottery pieces and a small rug for
our family room, while I purchased a small curio for my desk as the
perfect reminder of this special day. With time for one more brief
stop, we visited the VerKamp's
Curios Shop and purchased some matted photos of the canyon in case
ours did not clearly show the splendor of the canyon. In hindsight,
we sure are glad we did, for our camera did not do justice in depicting
the colors and shapes we experienced as we walked along the rim. As
the motor coach sailed back toward Las Vegas my wife cuddled up next
to me and napped. Meanwhile, I was so energized from the experience,
that I spent the time deep in thought, writing notes on the events
of the day. Thanks for allowing us to discover the Grand Canyon and
in doing so, experience something greater than myself.
